Description

This experience is based on our interpretation and ideation of the "Sweet Dreams" sculpture by Doug McAbee '94, '03. "Installed May 2, 2000, this five-piece sculpture by Doug McAbee '94, '03 was one of the first permanent public art projects on Winthrop's campus. It consists of five steel chairs that range in height from 8 to 20 feet and are arranged so that each faces a different direction. The artist envisioned the chairs as reflecting diverse levels of learning and growth." Each of the characters is facing a different direction and is labeled 1-5 based on their level of growth and experience in life. You will read what stage of life each character represents. We would like this experience to feel like an emotional breakthrough, pulling on the emotions of nostalgia and self-examination. We chose this specific site because there is very little said about the meaning behind these chairs making the interpretation of “Reflecting diverse levels of learning and growth” up to us. We felt that this way we would have more creative freedom while still being able to tie our interpretation into the meaning of learning and growth. The AR will reveal different perspectives on the meaning behind learning and growth. I want to express how, as a kid, we find carnivals to be like a whole different world. At the time, it feels like you have no worries. Then, as time progresses, you see the reality of entertainment like carnivals, and it loses its color because you start to realize that it is not the magical place that you remember it to be. In our adulthood, we start seeing the prices of things and wondering if we are getting our money's worth. The highest chair, which represents the peak of adulthood it shows that we can't just enjoy the wonder of things anymore. That as adults we wish to be kids again, even though as kids we wished to be adults.
