Imaginal Disk - Game Re-imagining

This project was completed for the course VCOM 162 Game Graphics. This is a culmination of all the assignments for this course, all of which were working towards a singular game re-imagining of another preexisting IP. I took the concept album Imaginal Disk, released in 2024 by Magdalena Bay, and created many graphics for a game version of the storyline presented in the album, music videos, and promotional material.

The first part of this project is this game logo, which I created using Adobe Illustrator. This logo was also used in some of the other graphics in this project, most notably the start screens.

Start Screens

These game start screens would be the first thing a player would see when starting up the game. There are three versions of this screen, as it would change as certain points in the game's story progression are hit.

Loading Screen

a game loading screen with an animated rotating disk in the lower left corner with the text 'SAY HELLO! IT'S YOU.'

This loading screen is what players will see in between loading zones and cutscenes while the game loads. The background was created in Adobe Illustrator, and the spinning disk animation was made using Adobe AfterEffects. The text will rotate through various lyrics from the album's tracklist. The lyrics depicted here are from the track True Blue Interlude.

Game Environments

The most extensive segment of this project are the two game environments. While the assignment only required a visual of the two environments, I made the decision to fully program these into Unity projects so that they could be actually walked through. I created the backgrounds and assets using Adobe Illustrator, and then I created the environment with player movement and parallax directly in Unity. One of these environments is the protagonist, True's, house, and the other is the town square in the town near where True lives. Original Character Design

I made an original design of a townsperson NPC for the game. I created two in-game sprites of the character, as well as three dialogue expressions. I also created a dialogue UI design to go alongside the character art so that it would be a reflection of what would be seen in game. I created these using Adobe Illustrator. To get the background for the dialogue screens, I placed the character sprites into the outdoor environment Unity project, screenshotted it, and overlayed the dialogue art overtop.
